History

This week we will be learning about Pythagoras, one of the first Greek mathematical thinkers.
His famous Pythagorean Theorem  (Pythagoras theorem) found out something amazing to do with right angled triangles. Can you find out what it was?

Literacy
You have won a whole class reward. Write a letter to your teacher persuading them to use your idea for the reward. Use the skills from our learning this week to help you – modal verbs, imperative verbs, adverbials to join ideas and emotion. Your reward must be realistic but FUN.

  9. Over 2000 years ago there was an amazing discovery about triangles:
    When a triangle has a right angle (90°) ...
... and squares are made on each of the three sides, ...
... then the biggest square has the exact same area as the other two squares put together!

It is called "Pythagoras' Theorem" and can be written in one short equation:

    a2 + b2 = c2

    Definition
The longest side of the triangle is called the "hypotenuse", so the formal definition is:

    In a right angled triangle:
the square of the hypotenuse is equal to
the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

  14. Democracy is a greek word which literally means people rule. 'Demos' means 'people' and 'Kratos' means 'rule'. It is when people of one country hold elections to make someone a Prime Minister or a President. Candidates running for the election make campaigns and form parties. Then people queue up to vote in selected, temporary polling booths and vote. The polling booths can be in schools, churches - anywhere that is big. The party that gets the most votes win and become the leading party. Different elections are also held to decide whether the country should join or leave a group or organisation (e.g Brexit, the Catalonia referendum to leave Spain, the Scottish referendum to leave the UK e.t.c). Countries that are democratic include: the UK, the USA, India, Spain, Poland - all of Europe actually. Some countries have monarchs but are ruled by a parliment. The UK for example.
